Materials
Slate is a particularly durable material and, depending on local conditions, a properly installed slate roof may last hundreds of years.
Traditionally Welsh slate was used. However, Spanish slate or artificial slates are now more often installed because of the lower cost. Modern artificial slates have improved in both appearance and durability and are made from a composite of resin polymers and cellulose fibres. At one time asbestos fibres were used. Special precautions must be observed when removing such slates.
Science
As with all types of roofs a balance between thermal insulation, condensation and ventilation must be kept in mind.
Thermal insulation should be laid on the ceiling to the attic and not between the roof rafters. Above the thermal insulation crossflow ventilation can be provided either by vented soffits or special air vents that are fitted in the slate roof at the front and at the back.
